Preparedness month emphasizes expecting the unexpected

Emergency Preparedness Month provides an ideal opportunity to assess how well we are prepared to handle an unexpected emergency – natural or man-caused.

Paul Marusich of the Ada City County Emergency Management office will present three informational sessions for ITD employees in southwest Idaho next week to help them become better prepared for family or work emergencies.

The first session will be Monday at 2 p.m. in the Headquarters Auditorium. He will return the following day for a 10 a.m. presentation. He also will speak to employees at the District 3 office, Sept. 22 in the large conference room.

Marusich reminds ITD employees that a basic emergency supply kit should contain the following:

• Water, one gallon per person, per day, for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered or hand-crank radio with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Manual can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
• Local maps
• Cell phone and chargers
