Gov. Otter to lead groundbreaking for
Twin Falls Alternate Route, Stage II Monday

Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter will lead a groundbreaking ceremony on Monday (Sept. 14), at 10:30 a.m., to formally begin construction of the Twin Falls Alternate Route Stage 2. The $26.6 million project will create jobs, stimulate economic activity, improve motorist safety and reduce congestion through Twin Falls.

The project is funded with federal stimulus money and is estimated to sustain or create approximately 500 jobs.

Joining the governor will be Idaho Senate Transportation Committee Chairman John McGee, Rep. Leon Smith, Twin Falls Mayor Lance Clow and Glanbia Inc., President and CEO Jeff Williams.

The ceremony for the Twin Falls Alternate Route Stage 2 will be held at 4100 North 2660 East. Traveling on Pole Line Road, the ceremony will take place approximately 2.5 miles west of Washington Street and four miles east of Filer. The ceremony will be adjacent to the Rock Creek crossing where a new bridge will be built. The ceremony location will be clearly marked by signs.

The project will reduce congestion, speed commerce and improve local shopping opportunities by providing a bypass for motorists and commercial traffic traveling past Twin Falls.

The first stage of the Twin Falls Alternate Route, from Blue Lakes Boulevard to Grandview Drive, was completed in 2006. Stage 2 will continue west for six miles along Pole Line Road to 2400 East Road then south to the U.S. 93/U.S. 30 junction. The highway will be two lanes but is engineered to expand to four lanes when traffic volume warrants.

The project also will construct a four-lane bridge over Rock Creek Canyon. The existing dirt fill and culvert will be removed and the creek restored through this area as part of the project.

W.W. Clyde Inc. of Springville, Utah, is the contractor on the project. Construction will begin this fall and is expected to be complete by the end of 2011.
