ITD, law enforcement agencies
partner in crackdown on overweight trucks

It is no surprise that heavy loads have the potential to damage Idaho’s highways and bridges, so enforcement of load limits is an important component of extending the longevity of these routes.

Evidently, some area haulers were running heavy loads overnight and on weekends to avoid Idaho’s roving Ports of Entry (POE) operations in rural communities.

Earlier this summer, the Boise County Sheriff and Idaho City Police Chief offered ITD Idaho City foreman Cecil Dallman their assistance in enforcing truck weight regulations in the Idaho City area. Dallman contacted District 3 POE Area Supervisor Craig LaChance to see what could be done.

Local law enforcement officials asked to have a set of portable scales stationed at the ITD maintenance facility in Idaho City and requested training on use of the scales. In late August, POE rovers Steve Savage and Sherill Allen delivered some older ITD scales and provided the hands-on training to the Idaho City police chief and two Boise County deputies.

The partnership between the POE and local law enforcement agencies is historically strong, and other district POE rover personnel also have provided training and equipment to assist in the protection of Idaho’s highway system.
