CDHD provides influenza illness update

October 6, 2009
Sept.1 was the official start date of the 2009-2010 influenza season, and we are starting fresh in our H1N1 case counting. As of Oct. 1, there have been 82 confirmed cases of H1N1 influenza in our health district. Five of those stricken were hospitalized.

On Sept. 29, Southwest District Health reported Idaho’s first H1N1-related fatality. The man, in his 50s, was a Canyon County resident and was known to have underlying medical conditions.

Idaho orders its first shipment of H1N1 vaccine
On Sept. 30, Idaho Department of Health and Welfare placed its first order for the state of Idaho for the H1N1 vaccine. The first few weekly shipments of vaccine are anticipated to be small, with the first shipment of approximately 9,000 doses for the entire state. Additionally, we anticipate that shipments initially will consist entirely or almost entirely of the nasal spray vaccine.

In our region, these first doses have been received and were distributed to our local acute care hospitals, community health centers and to CDHD.

CDHD moves forward with vaccination plans
As mentioned above, we do not anticipate receiving large quantities of vaccine for a few more weeks. We will not be able to set up large public vaccination clinics until we receive larger shipments of vaccine in both nasal spray and injectible formulations.

In the interim, CDHD plans to vaccinate specific groups within the vaccine target groups, such as Emergency Medical Services providers. More information on the specific times, days and locations of these targeted clinics will be made available via direct notification, press releases, and the Health Alert Network.

Public vaccination clinic locations
Locations for our public vaccination clinics have been determined. Days and times will be announced closer to the date when we anticipate receiving adequate shipments of vaccine. Our locations will be:
