ITD honors Headquarters employees for service

The message was clear and repeated often Wednesday afternoon. The continuing commitment of ITD employees to the citizens of Idaho is what sets the department apart.

Idaho Transportation Board Chairman Darrel Manning offered his appreciation to more than 80 employees who received service and special awards during an afternoon ceremony at Headquarters. Chief Engineer Tom Cole, who served as emcee, repeated the message, as did board vice chairman Neil Miller of District 5.

Miller said board members receive a lot of “good phone calls about ITD’s good people.” “The thing that I have noticed about the people who make ITD work is they believe change is not the enemy,” he said.

He said ITD employees can all share in establishing and maintaining good relations with legislators and the public, and do a lot to share with others “the good work we do.”

Following those remarks, Cole presented 57 awards to employees who reached employment milestones in the first half of 2009.

Peter Hartman and Gus Shanine of the Federal Highway Administration’s Idaho region presented six individual awards to ITD employees who have worked in close partnership with the federal agency. The “Good Partnership Recognition” awards are part of a new program that focuses on the strong working relationships the state and federal agencies have created.

Recipients include Walter Burnside, Michelle George, Mary Harker, Nathan Hesterman, Robert Nelson Jr., and Amy Schroeder.

Three AASHTO awards were presented to:

  • Dave Tuttle, Faces of Transportation photo and video contest
  • Evelyn Blank, Steve Grant, Mark Hall, Lisa Losness and Tuttle for creating a public service announcement about bicycle safety, and
  • Jeff Stratten, recipient of the National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop Founder’s Award

Mary Hunter acknowledged the national Fatality Analysis Reporting System award for Joan Benzon (Office of Highway Operations and Safety), but will delay presenting it until the spring 2010 service awards ceremony.

Benzon was unable to attend Wednesday because she was at the side of husband Doug who is recovering at a Boise hospital from injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian crash on the Headquarters campus last week. Doug would have received a 35-year service award but is recovering at Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center.
