Former Lewiston city manager Jan Vassar
named to fill District 2 vacancy on transportation board

Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter Thursday announced the appointment today of Jan Vassar, former longtime city manager of Lewiston, to fill the Idaho Transportation Board vacancy left by the death of Bruce Sweeney in August. Sweeney’s term was due to expire at the end of January 2010.

Vassar fills the District 2 seat on the seven-member Transportation Board, which oversees operations of the Idaho Transportation Department. District 2 includes Clearwater, Idaho, Latah, Lewis and Nez Perce counties in north-central Idaho. The Governor will decide later whether to reappoint Vassar to the Board for a full six-year term.

“It’s impossible to overstate the importance of safe roads and bridges to Idaho’s citizens, or the importance of efficient corridors of commerce to our economy. I’m pleased that Jan is joining us in the work of maintaining and improving our essential state infrastructure,” Governor Otter said.

“Her experience with handling budgets, managing employees, overseeing construction and being entrusted with the people’s money will be a great asset to the Transportation Board.”

Vassar has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Washington State University. She was Lewiston’s city manager from September 1992 to February 2006, supervising all city departments including the airport, police, fire, parks, community development and public works.

Before that she was director of Administrative Services for the city, executive assistant to the city manager, and city clerk. In addition, Vassar has been a member of the Idaho Public Transportation Advisory Council since July 2007.
