Direct from the Director

I am excited about the opportunity to lead the Idaho Transportation Department – a department that accomplishes great things. I come to you from Michigan where I have 30 years of experience in the transportation field. I have been employed in district offices and headquarters, with experience in multiple transportation modes. Being involved in development, construction, maintenance, operations and numerous administrative functions, it is likely I have at one time or another during my career touched an area that you work in.

Even though I come from Michigan, I am no stranger to the western United States. I have family in Washington, Arizona and California and have visited Idaho several times during the past decade. My wife, Jackie, and I enjoy the area and look forward to being residents here.

In preparing for my interview with the Idaho Transportation Board, I researched your department, staff and operations. I discovered that this department is an excellent place to work and has hard working, dedicated employees. My research proved accurate when I had the opportunity in December to visit every district office in Idaho. Many high-quality ideas were presented to me and it is evident that good things are happening at ITD.

I understand that the Idaho Transportation Department is under intense political scrutiny with audits, executive orders and public perception. This type of scrutiny is not unusual for a transportation department, given the economic times and the need for additional resources. The intensity will likely heighten as the Governor’s Transportation Funding Task Force finalizes its recommendations.

It is my job as director to minimize these types of impacts on the organization so you can do your job delivering transportation products and services to the citizens of Idaho. I have already begun to develop relationships with members of the legislative branch and the Governor’s office. This time spent will benefit us all as we continue to establish greater credibility and tell the Idaho Transportation Department story.

During the upcoming year, I intend to get out to each of the districts and to all areas within the Boise office. I appreciate the many invitations already extended to me and look forward to visiting your projects, seeing your operations and learning about the issues you face. When we meet, it is important that you let me know what I can do as your director to help you in doing your job better.

In the upcoming weeks, look for future “Direct from the Director” reports as I outline my leadership style, my vision for the Idaho Transportation Department and my expectations of you and the organization.
