Idaho Rideshare program continues to grow

In May 2008, ITD purchased the statewide license for Rideshare, a free online ride-matching service. The program allows individuals to register their commute information and search for other people to share their commute via car or vanpool.

Rideshare also offers a matching service for people who wish to share the ride to listed sporting events, concerts, exhibits and tourist areas.

Over the past 19 months, Idaho’s Rideshare program has grown at an average monthly rate of 12 percent - ending the year with more than 1,235 members. With the launch of the new and improved Web site anticipated this month and increased efforts to build awareness of the program around the state, 2010 promises to bring continued growth.

Rideshare is not only a great ride-matching service for individual commuters, it is also a great resource for organizations to facilitate Rideshare programs for employees, communities, or entire geographical areas by becoming a Rideshare Transportation Coordinator (RTC).

System support and program resources are available, making facilitation and promotion of Rideshare programs fun and easy. And, participation in and utilization of Rideshare is free.

“Rideshare is a simple, efficient, and convenient way for connecting people as they travel every day from home to work, school or events,” said Randy Kyrias, administrator of the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Public Transportation. “Local employers or transportation providers can facilitate the program for their employees and/or communities – which will reduce traffic, save money and provide more travel options for everyone. A win-win situation for all of Idaho.”

The Division of Public Transportation is working to bring Rideshare to all regions of Idaho. Anyone interested in the program or who has questions about using the Rideshare service or becoming coordinator should contact Kirk Montgomery, Rideshare Commuter Contact Representative at (208) 387-6163 or e-mail kmontgomery@achd.ada.id.us.
