ITD employees covered by CDL texting ban

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced this week an immediate federal ban on text messaging by all commercial truck drivers while behind the wheel.

That ban also extends to all ITD employees operating vehicles with a commercial driver’s license, announced Cheryl Rost, manager of risk management.

“Not only is it now federal law, but it’s also common sense that no driver should put his or her life and the lives of others in jeopardy by texting while driving,” she said.

According to the Tuesday announcement, the prohibition is effective immediately and applies to operator of vehicles like large trucks and buses. The ban is the latest in a series of actions taken by the U.S. Department of Transportation to combat distracted driving since LaHood convened a national summit on the issue last fall.

Truck and bus drivers who text while driving commercial vehicles may be subject to civil or criminal penalties of up $2,750 for violations.
