Enforcement campaign catches more than impaired drivers

Ensuring safe travel on Idaho’s highways is a prime motivation for impaired driving high visibility enforcement campaigns, but a recent Christmas/New Year’s traffic safety effort shows that more people than just impaired drivers are caught breaking laws and displaying dangerous driving behaviors.

ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety (OHOS) works to reduce deaths and injuries from traffic crashes by allocating federal funds to address dangerous driving behaviors. The enforcement campaign is part of the department’s commitment to achieve a goal of zero deaths on Idaho’s highways.

According to statistics gathered by OHOS, 61 agencies statewide participated in the holiday patrols that were funded through a federal grant administered by ITD.

Law enforcement officers made 446 driving under the influence (DUI) arrests across the state during the 21-day period (Dec. 14, 2009, to Jan. 3, 2010).

In addition to the DUI arrests, law enforcement officers apprehended 183 fugitives, made 269 felony arrests, recorded 236 drug arrests and recovered 12 stolen vehicles. A number of additional citations also were issued during the campaign.

The next statewide impaired driving enforcement campaign is planned for March 12-22.
