Exercise challenge to soars on diferent plane

For the first time, ITD’s annual exercise challenge will leave the dusty trails, bicycle and jogging tracks, golf courses and fitness centers behind and reach for new heights this year.

At least the personal reports that track progress will take to the air in “Fly Idaho.

“Does your exercise routine need to get off the ground? Is your health headed for a tailspin? Now is the time to take your workout to new heights,” according to registration information distributed recently. “ ‘Become an Exercise Ace’ while participating in the Fly Idaho exercise challenge.”

This year’s 10-week, 30-hour (that’s just a minimum) fitness event begins Sunday, May 2 and continues through July 10. The “Fly Idaho” theme capitalizes on the celebration of a century of flight in Idaho. “The 2010 exercise challenge celebrates Idaho aviation while learning about airports managed by ITD’s Aeronautics Division,” the announcement says.

Each hour of exercise translates into miles and progress toward reaching some of the unique backcountry airstrips that ITD operates. The program is open to all ITD employees and Federal Highway Administration employees in Idaho.

The goal is to exercise at least an average of three hours per week. The program accommodates all fitness levels, from beginners to well-conditioned athletes and provides the motivation and incentive to build on that fitness level. ITD employees are encouraged to continue a regular exercise routine as a lifestyle choice even after the 10-week program ends.

In addition to better health and physical condition, the benefits of participation include regular raffle drawings for individuals who turn in log sheets every two weeks, earning your “wings” at the mid-point and one of several incentives for completing the 30-hour minimum:

  • A “Fly Idaho” windbreaker jacket
  • A duffle bag, or
  • A baseball-style cap

The exercise challenge also encourages a “buddy” system to welcome first-time participants, friendly competition among districts, and a special challenge involving ITD and Idaho’s division of the FHWA.
