CIP nominates airport kiosk for national safety award

Already a two-time award winner this year, the ITD information kiosk at the Boise Airport has been nominated for a third award in a nationwide competition sponsored by the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA).

Connecting Idaho Partners, a joint venture of URS and CH2M HILL, nominated the kiosk and informational campaign that supports the GARVEE Transportation Program. Earlier in April the Kiosk received a first-place award from the Idaho Press Club in the Media Kit category, and this week it received an ITD Excellence in Transportation award.

“Because the public greatly affects safety in roadway work zones, team members worked with the Idaho Transportation Department, the city of Boise/Boise Airport, The Langdon Group, Power Engineers and Catapult 3 to employ the kiosk,” explains the award nomination.

The kiosk is the result of this partnership. It includes computer-animated simulations of Interstate 84 construction projects scheduled to occur over the next two years, and features the design of a first of its kind in Idaho – a single-point urban interchange – at Vista Avenue…”

The kiosk is located at the ground level of the airport near the baggage claim area and a hotel phone board. It graphically illustrates changes coming to the interstate using a 50-inch plasma television and a series of continuous-loop videos. It is a pioneer in Idaho to promote public awareness and safety while traveling in the ever-changing work zone.

Interchangeable panels enable the easy substitution of photographs and project descriptions. They are updated on a regular basis to increase awareness of work zone activities and project schedules.

“The kiosk is helping educate the public about current and future construction projects, and informing motorists of major traffic impacts during the biggest interstate improvement project in state history,” according to the nomination.

“An estimated 342,000 people who pass through the airport monthly will be directly impacted by interstate construction, so informing our traveling public is critical,” said Richard McConnell, airport director.
