May in Motion campaign encourages
alternative commuting methods throughout month

ITD employees in the Treasure Valley can improve their fitness, save money, ease congestion, reduce air pollution, earn special recognition for the department – even get to know each other a little better this month.

May in Motion, a celebration of alternative transportation, is a promotion by the Ada County Highway District’s Commuteride program and a host of Treasure Valley sponsors, public and private. It is designed to encourage participation in alternative transportation, such as carpools, vanpools, bicycles and walking.

ACHD’s Commuteride program is the oldest multi-employer vanpool program in the country; it has functioned for more than 30 years in the Treasure Valley, helping commuters get to and from work together and save time, money and air quality in the process.

Among the special May In Motion events planned this year are:

May 8, 9 – The Boise Green Expo, Boise Centre on the Grove
May 21 – Alternative Transportation / National Bike to work Day, 8th & Idaho 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
June 24 May in Motion Awards Luncheon, Stueckle Sky Center, BSU Campus, noon to 1 p.m.

“Participating In May In Motion helps reduce the number of cars on the road and protects the lifestyle that makes the Treasure Valley a great place to live, work and run a business,” according to event promoters.

ITD participates in the corporate competition, but individual participation is strictly voluntary, according to department coordinator Judy Davis. Do you want to mention awards we have won previously? In 2008 ITD achieved the bronze level of participation and in 2009 the silver level was achieved. Let’s go for the GOLD!

Anyone who would like to help ITD’s chances for a corporate award can contact Davis for a “participation-tracking calendar.” It enables employees to log the number of days in May they use commuting options other than a single-occupant vehicle. Log sheets will be collected at the end of the month. Awards are based on ITD’s participation level. Headquarters employees received an e-mail with the log sheet attached. The Excel tracking spreadsheet also is available for downloading here.

As part of May in Motion month, free passes are available on a limited basis for ITD employees to use on ValleyRide bus routes. The passes may be used throughout May and can be picked up from Davis in the Human Resource Services office.

ITD employees who do not live or work in the Treasure Valley can demonstrate their commitment to alternative transportation. May is National Bike Month. Bike to Work Week is May 17-21. Employees who must limit their bike to a single day might want to set aside Friday, May 21 – National Bike to Work Day – for the trip.
