ITD, CIP, Langdon Group receive national work zone safety award
for Vista/airport information kiosk

ITD, Connecting Idaho Partners and the GARVEE office won a highway safety award in early June at the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation’s (ARTBA-TDF) 12th annual “Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness Awards” event. The award was announced during the 2010 International Bridge Conference in Pittsburgh.

The awards competition from ARTBA recognizes outstanding efforts to reduce roadway work zone construction accidents, injuries and fatalities.

“Winning a work zone safety award for the Vista kiosk means a great deal to ITD. We looked for something that would break yesterday’s barrier in terms of communicating safety to the public, and we are very pleased with the outcome,” explained ITD Deputy Director Scott Stokes. “The airport serves as a gateway to travelers both local citizens and visitors. It was the perfect way to get our message out. We were able to use our municipal partnerships to set a new standard and get a little better at what we do.”

The ARTBA award is the fifth for the Vista project. In addition to the Roadway Work Zone Safety Awareness award, Vista has also won awards from the American Society of Professional Engineers (ASCE), the WTS (Treasure Valley Chapter) Innovative Engineering Solutions Award, the ITD/CIP Performance Award, and the ITD 2010 Excellence in Construction Award. The ASCE Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement award went to Stanley Consultants, the group that designed Vista.

ITD’s award came in the Statewide Outreach Program category, honoring organizations for promoting roadway work zone safety.

The award explanation cited the effort to notify travelers at the Boise Airport of ongoing construction activity by creating a work zone information kiosk near the baggage claim area. The award also recognized project partner The Langdon Group for its work coordinating the project.

ARTBA explained that the Vista kiosk project partners “created a multi-media resource including computer-animated simulations of the nearby Interstate 84 construction projects, graphically illustrated design elements, and demonstrated how motorists should drive through work zones. The team also produced informational brochures and video messages to update the public on construction progress.”
