I-84 construction worker injured in Thursday fall

A worker on the Ten Mile Interchange project sustained non life-threatening injuries at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday when he fell about 20 feet and landed in construction material at one end of the bridge.

Ada County Paramedics transported Michael M. Burke from the construction site west of Meridian to St. Alphonsus Regional Medical Center in Boise. His condition was reported as stable Friday morning.

The Concrete Placing Company (CPC) employee fell from a perch inside an access hole near a bridge abutment; he was not working over the travel lanes, which were open at the time. He fell from an access point that enables workers to access the bridge from underneath.

Paramedics applied a splint to the worker's ankle and immobilized his neck as a precaution before transporting him to St. Alphonsus. He was responsive and conscious at the scene.

Other CPC employees working on the structure were sent home following the incident but have been advised to return Friday morning. No other construction crews working on the interchange were affected.

CPC hired safety consultant, FirstLink, to investigate the incident.

Construction on the $33.8 million project is expected to finish by next summer.
