Cyber security awareness month focuses on protection

ITD employees have one of the greatest professional communication tools at their fingertips. That same technology has the potential to introduce unwanted obstacles that can slow productivity. A focus on cyber security can help ensure work continues without serious interruption.

National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) has been observed every year since 2004, encouraging employees to protect their computers and the national cyber infrastructure. ITD participates in and supports the national effort.

“It is our shared responsibility to stay safe online,” encourage ITD Cyber Security Officer Forrest Anderson.

ITD will facilitate several informational/educational sessions in the Headquarters auditorium that focus on cyber security, networking, awareness, threats and personal responsibility.

Thursday, Oct. 14, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., General cyber security awareness
Friday, Oct. 15, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., Social networking policy considerations
Thursday, Oct. 28,1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., General cyber security awareness
Friday, Oct. 29, 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Advanced persistent threats

The Department of Administration and the Idaho Office of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) will initiate the cyber security awareness effort Friday (Oct. 8) with a morning session in the Headquarters auditorium. It will be will an introduction at 9 a.m. and include information from Dale Dixon of the Better Business Bureau in Boise, the federal Department of Homeland Security and Idaho’s Deputy Chief Information Security Officer Steve Poeppe.

“Although this is geared more for the average user, with Dale Dixon and DHS there, I think many different people will be interested in attending…” said Terry Pobst-Martin, Chief Information Security Officer for the Department of Administration.
