ITD to join in celebrating centennial of flight, Oct. 23

ITD’s Division of Aeronautics will join pilots and airplane enthusiasts from throughout the region next weekend to commemorate the first powered flight in Idaho.

The first flight recorded aircraft in the skies of Idaho occurred Oct. 13, 1910, in Lewiston. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter recognized that memorable flight and the active role of aviation in Idaho in February when he designated October 2010 as Idaho Centennial of Flight Month.

A celebration of Idaho’s aviation milestone is planned for Oct. 23, at the Lewiston-Nez Perce County Regional Airport in Lewiston.

ITD’s Division of Aeronautics played an active role in promoting that event throughout the state during the past two years in its Rudder Flutter aviation publication, outreach activities and through its association with aviation groups such as the Idaho Aviation Association.

Recently, the Division of Aeronautics produced a poster for distribution celebrating the Idaho Centennial of Flight. The poster includes historic photographs, the governor’s proclamation and a collection of Idaho flight trivia.

Aeronautics personnel also donated the $12 fee for an official aircraft registration sticker for the recreated Curtiss Pusher aircraft that will be flown in Lewiston as part of the centennial celebration.

The Lewiston community and airport are taking the lead in organizing the Oct. 23 event.
