ITD making strides in effort to be best:
being considered for 'Better Government' recognition

ITD’s effort to become the best transportation department in the country is continuing to gain national attention.

Less than one month after Governing Magazine featured ITD’s performance dashboard in its “Idea Center” feature, another better government organization is asking the department to share its innovative ideas.

The Pioneer Institute, a non-partisan public policy research institute, sponsors an annual “Better Government Competition.” The institute searches for the most innovative ideas from government, private sector, and non-profit organizations.

“Your system to track performance and progress in nine performance area that correlate to the department’s three primary goals is both impressive and admirable,” Mary Timba, a representative of the institute, said. “The transportation system dashboard is exactly the type of innovation that helps government work efficiently and effectively.”

Deputy Director Scott Stokes said the request shows ITD is one of the nation’s leaders in implementing plans to increase transparency, become accountable and deliver on promises.

“We will share our accomplishments with other states through participating in this competition,” Stokes said. “While I am sure many states can learn from our programs, we will also learn from the other entries.”

A national winner and finalists will be announced in June.
