COMPASS develops toolkit to promote transportation options
in rural communities

'All Dressed Up and No Way to Get There?'

The Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho (COMPASS) released new tools to help rural communities facilitate and promote transportation alternatives.

“All Dressed Up and No Way to Get There” is a tool kit of resources designed for agencies with limited funding and staff time. The items in the tool kit are easy to use, predominantly low-tech, and free or inexpensive to implement.

The tool kit contains background information, lists of ideas, and links to examples for facilitating and promoting carpooling, walking/biking, using community vehicles and creating ordinances to promote land use that supports alternative transportation.

Templates, which can be downloaded and customized, also are provided for many of the items discussed, including a model park-n-ride lot lease agreement, a model ordinance and a variety of promotional materials. The tool kit also includes links to additional transportation resources in southwest Idaho.

“The templates are quick and easy to use,” explains COMPASS Principal Planner Liisa Itkonen. “An individual can simply open a file, such as a poster or newsletter article, add their agency’s logo and contact information, save and print. They give agencies a place to start.”

Development of the tool kit was funded through a grant from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
