New lane markings leads the way home safely

Last summer, ITD tried a different pavement-marking plan on Idaho 55 on the south side of Horseshoe Bend Hill as an effort to reduce the number of crashes historically seen in that section. Since there was no observed benefit or reduced crashes, the striping crew put it back the way it had previously been in response to customer comments.

In an attempt to reduce the number of crashes, ITD striped the roadway with more restrictive no-passing zones based on line-of-sight distances. Public input indicated that the traveling public wanted to again have more room to make legal passes around slower-moving traffic, so in the spring the striping was returned to its previous state to allow for additional passing opportunities.

A recent e-mail from Diane Macklin, a frequent commuter in the area, is representative of the positive response.

“Kudos to changing the center lines on the south side of Horseshoe Bend - Highway 55 … again having the option to pass is great! It was a long winter commuting every day to work, and being so unfortunate as to get stuck behind the over-cautious drivers coming down to Ada County.
