Retired Navy pilot named Aeronautics administrator
A native of Idaho whose aviation experience includes flight training and education, military service and administrative work in the private sector, was named the new Division of Aeronautics administrator this week. ITD Director Pam Lowe announced Thursday afternoon the selection of John DeThomas who will leave his family’s farm near Rupert, to assume the administrative position, effective April 9.

Salary package may be recommended April 9
ITD employees can expect salary increases ranging from about 2.75 percent to 5 percent, depending on performance, position in pay range and – for some – their job classification. Targeted positions that historically are difficult to fill or retain employees for likely will receive additional targeted pay increases. The CEC committee hopes to recommend a salary plan to the Executive Team on April 9.

Plugs pulled on 25-year-old data terminals

On a day when the Idaho Transportation Board acknowledged the retirement of a dozen veteran employees, they also learned of a less conspicuous retirement – the mothballing of 16 monochrome computer terminals located within the bowels of the computer center at Headquarters.

Board votes to form highway inventory program
ITD and the Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC) approved a cooperative agreement to establish a Local Highway Inventory Program to verify the number of improved highway miles.

Spring breakup, heavy loads threaten highways

The simple term for a vexing annual occurrence in northern climates is “spring breakup,” a reference to the potential impact on highways of long, cold winters and the recurring cycle of thaws and freezes. Maintenance crews learn to live with spring breakups of short duration; prolonged cycles, however, bring the risk of significant damage to highway surfaces.

New Web site focuses on engineers in training
Over the past two months the EITs, with support from Cynthia Gardner and other Corporate IT staff, created a Web site to showcase all aspects of the EIT program. The site includes information about ITD, the EIT program, qualifications to apply for the program, where to apply, advancements and testimonials from past and present EITs.

Aeronautics to co-sponsor safe pilot seminars
ITD's Division of Aeronautics, in cooperation with the Federal Aviation Administration, will co-sponsor a series of four Safe Pilot seminars on the use of aeronautical charts. The seminars will be held March 26 in Boise, March 28 in Twin Falls, March 29 in Idaho Falls and April 23 in Lewiston.

51 employees to receive service awards Wednesday
Although employment longevity typically is measured in years, for many in the transportation department it also is measured in contributions to Idaho travelers and improvements to the system they depend on. More than 50 ITD employees, including a dozen who concluded their service through retirement in the last six months of 2006, will be honored for their contributions Wednesday at a semi-annual service awards ceremony.
