Bids accepted for first Connecting Idaho project
The first project under Gov. Dirk Kempthorne's Connecting Idaho plan to improve the state's highways was advertised for construction bids on Monday (May 15). A contract to improve U.S. 30 from Topaz to Lava Hot Springs in southeast Idaho was advertised in the Idaho State Journal. Topaz to Lava Hot Springs is the first of several projects to widen U.S. 30 between McCammon and Soda Springs.

Idaho's interstates to be featured on new Web site
How well do you know Idaho’s interstate highway system? Do you know which route is both an interstate and intrastate highway? Or which two Idaho interstates generally follow historic routes first used by western settlers. Or how many miles of interstate highways are located in Idaho.The answers to those questions and a wealth of other information about Idaho’s role in the interstate system are part of a series of new Web pages scheduled for unveiling on the ITD Internet site next week

Bank employees honored for highway cleanups
Keeping a one-mile segment of U.S. 93 north of Twin Falls free of litter has become a family affair for members of Farmers National Bank. Employees adopted the segment as part of the Idaho Transportation Department’s Adopt-a-Highway program. When employees assemble for regular clean-up campaigns, family members often join in. Even employees of other Farmers National Bank branches in south-central Idaho also band together to battle highway blight.

"Alignment' workshop sets framework for Connecting Idaho
More than 50 individuals who will play key roles in implementing the Connecting Idaho program met in Boise last week to begin creating its operational framework. The three-day “Alignment” workshop at The Washington Group International included introductory remarks by WGI’s Steve Hanks, ITD Director Dave Ekern and Federal Highway Administration division administrator Steve Moreno.

BPIR researches new form of propulsion
In a coordinated science experiment designed to emphasize the final letter of their acronym, ITD’s BPIR staff conducted an important lunchtime research project on the front lawn of the Headquarters complex. Focusing on the research element of their office’s duties (which is normally limited to econometric and financial issues), the entire BPIR staff worked together under the leadership of Senior Budget Analyst Joel Drake on an experiment they termed RPG (Rapid Carbonic Geyser)

DMV tests new decal system
A new system designed to save money and improve efficiency by eliminating the need to order, maintain and stock several years of pre-printed registration decals will be tested this spring by the Division of Motor Vehicles in partnership with 3M. If the six-month trial by the DMV’s Commercial Vehicle Services Section is successful the Embedded Decal Pilot Project will lead all DMV or county offices to print registration decals on demand for customers when vehicles are registered.

McCall Fly-In scheduled for Aug. 11-13
Once a safety program for pilots and their aircraft, the McCall Family Fly-In has evolved into an activity that attracts flying enthusiasts from throughout the region for a weekend of aviation exhibits, educational and safety seminars and entertainment.

New specialized collegiate license plates to go on sale
Supporters of three private Idaho higher education institutions will be able to visually show their pride and at the same time help raise funds for their favorite schools by purchasing the newest version of Idaho’s of collegiate license plates. The new collegiate plates feature logos from Albertson College of Idaho (Caldwell), Brigham Young University-Idaho (Rexburg) and Northwest Nazarene University (Nampa).

Seat belt enforcement campaign under way
One hundred twenty-six... That is the number of people, seven years of age and older, who died in Idaho car crashes last year and were not wearing seat belts. Another 452 sustained critical injuries because they were not restrained. ITD and Idaho law enforcement agencies remind people that buckling up is the best defense against serious injury or death for drivers and their passengers.
