New federal funding bill takes us another step in 21st Century journey

Last week’s Congressional approval of the federal transportation bill takes Idaho a step closer in realizing the vision to create a 21st century transportation system for Idaho. According to the Federal Highway Administration, we will receive a 30.32 percent funding increase over the life of the bill, or approximately $276 million annually.

Annual fly-in features education, safety, fun
A flying poker run for pilots, rides in a vintage biplane, as well as social events and safety seminars add unique touches to the annual McCall Family Fly-In, Aug. 12-14. Pilots, aviation enthusiasts and families will converge at the McCall Airport for the weekend event, sponsored by the Idaho Transportation Department’s Division of Aeronautics, the city of McCall and the McCall Airport.

Improved fatality rate among nations seven best
The decline in Idaho highway deaths was the seventh best in the nation according to information released this week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The number of fatalities on Idaho highways dropped from 293 in 2003 to 260 last year, representing a decline of 11.3 percent.

Campaign reminds motorists of drunk driving risks
A month-long safety campaign will put Idaho drivers on notice about the consequences of being caught driving while drunk. The message – “You Drink, You Drive, You Lose,” begin appearing Wednesday (Aug. 10).

Celebrating a trail of collaboration
Blackfoot and Bingham County residents who enjoy bicycling, rollerblading, jogging and walking will assemble Aug. 17 to celebrate completion of the a new recreational trail – the Greater Blackfoot Area Greenbelt – a loop of nearly 10 miles that connects the city with Rose Pond.

Turn of shovels initiates Karcher Interchange project
Nearly 300 people celebrated the beginning of the Karcher Interchange project in Nampa this week by attending the groundbreaking ceremony or the informational public open house. The groundbreaking was held Tuesday at the Karcher Road/Caldwell Boulevard in Nampa. The informational open house followed on Wednesday (Aug. 3) at the Nampa Civic Center, drawing about 75 people.

Students will learn control of traffic flow
Motorists may notice the 12 participants of the University of Idaho’s Traffic Signal Summer Workshop at a Moscow intersection next week, testing their skills at engineering and designing traffic signal control systems. The sixth annual workshop Aug. 7-12 is a hands-on opportunity for students and professionals from across the U.S.
