Snowplow driver unhurt in crash with semi-truck
An ITD snowplow driver was startled and shaken, but otherwise unharmed, Thursday after the truck he was driving was sent into an uncontrolled spin on Interstate 90. Pete Peterson, a veteran maintenance worker in District 1 was plowing snow on the inside lane of I-90 when the driver of a semi truck attempted to pass on the right, lost control and clipped the wing extension of the plow.

Officers to begin crackdown on impaired drivers
Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are getting tough with drivers early as holiday traffic safety emphasis patrols hit the streets beginning today (Dec. 1). In addition to citations and warnings this holiday season, law enforcement officers will distribute a brochure explaining why Idaho is targeting drunk or drugged drivers, aggressive driving behavior and drivers not wearing seat belts.

ITD to begin delivering OSHA safety course
Employees who work on roadway construction and maintenance projects will be better able to recognize hazards and reduce the risk of injury and death after completing an optional 10-hour training program now available for delivery in each district. Jointly developed and distributed by the National Safety Council and the American Road & Transportation Builders Association, the course is the first of its kind that focuses directly on the day-to-day hazards.

New rules approved for high-visibility clothing
The Federal Highway Administration published a final rule Nov. 24, adding Part 634 to Title 23 requiring the use of high-visibility safety clothing for workers, emergency personnel, and others in the right-of-way of federal-aid highways.

Groundbreaking kicks off interchange project
ITD officials joined Caldwell residents and community leaders this afternoon (Friday, Dec. 1) in subfreezing temperatures to formally break ground on a new Interstate 84 interchange at Franklin Road. Caldwell Mayor Garret Nancolas and Albertson College of Idaho President Bob Hoover were among the speakers at the afternoon event.

Capitol dignitary visits Idaho Port of Entry

A national celebrity, the focus of attention in the nation’s capital the next month, made a brief visit to Idaho recently, although no one got a good look at the guest. It remained obscured in a carefully wrapped enclosure. The Capitol Christmas Tree, which was selected from the state of Washington, stopped at Idaho's East Boise Port of Entry.
