Transportation board
Department's long-range plan to be presented next week
Idaho on the Move: a Long-Range Plan to Improve Safety, Mobility, and Economic Vitality, will be presented to the Idaho Transportation Board for approval at its December meeting (Wednesday and Thursday) in Boise. If approved, the plan will be submitted to the governor’s office by the end of this month, in accordance with the governor’s executive order.

Ceremony planned for Twin Falls Alternate Route
The recent cold and wet weather has slowed construction crews as they near completion of stage II of the U.S. 93 Twin Falls Alternate Route, but opening of the roadway is near enough to celebrate the accomplishment. The Twin Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and ITD are leading a community ribbon cutting beginning at noon on Wednesday (Dec. 8) at the west end of the new Rock Creek Bridge.

Avalanche team keeping eye on slopes, weather
The winter avalanche season officially began in the slide-prone Idaho 21 area between Banner Summit and Grandjean on Nov. 1. The District 3 avalanche crew (Bill Nicholson, Mick Riffie and Chantel Astorga) began twice-daily weather forecasting and snowpack monitoring on that date. Recent heavy snowstorms make regular avalanche monitoring critical to driver safety.

Winter
Guard against bone-chilling cold, winds
There is a proverb that says, “Winter either bites with its teeth or lashes with its tail.” In either case it is likely the wind that enhances the harsh sensation. Colder temperatures without wind can be crisp and refreshing. It is the combination of cold and wind that seems to drive winter right down into the bone.

It's snow joke:
Winter arrives ahead
of the calendar
Proving that winter's white gift isn't all back-breaking drudgery, several women in the Division of Motor Vehicles at Headquarters brought snow to life. They build a bigger-than-life snowman this week. But alas, even the snowman was no match for the warming that followed. Two days later, he was a mere shadow of himself.

GARVEE
Topaz bridge on its last legs
Removal of the old truss bridge continues as part of the Topaz Bridge replacement on U.S. 30 in District 5. During this GARVEE-funded project, the existing two-lane, five-span, 379-foot long truss bridge, spanning the Portneuf River, Marsh Valley Canal, and Union Pacific Railroad, will be removed. In its place will be a 4-lane bridge that will be 613 feet long, and contains 3.5 million pounds of structural steel.
