Teen driver safety week focuses attention on youngest drivers
More teenagers die in car crashes than any other cause, so the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) designates the third week in October as a reminder for young drivers to make safe driving choices. National Teen Driver Safety Week is Oct. 19-25 and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) continues its partnership with State Farm to provide funding for traffic safety events at high schools throughout Idaho.

ITD Hearing Officer John Tomlinson awarded certificate by National Judicial College
When John Tomlinson was promoted to ITD Hearing Officer in August of 2012, he immediately set out to be better-equipped for his new duties. That culminated recently in certification from the National Judicial College (NJC) with a Certificate of Judicial Development in Administrative Law-Adjudication Skills, an honor reserved for a select group of judges and hearing officers.

Zundel saves department thousands by making computer speakers optional
The Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) department has recently changed their computer purchasing guidelines. Tyler Zundel, who manages planning and governance functions in Enterprise Technology Services (ETS) in the Division of Administration, received a concerned message regarding dozens of computer speakers being returned and thrown out every month, most of which were unused.

Moscow traffic detection equipment will gather data as part of research project with University of Idaho
Nearly a dozen detection cameras mounted on a single traffic signal in downtown Moscow are helping gather data as part of an extensive research partnership between the Idaho Transportation Department and the University of Idaho. The test location is at the intersection of U.S. 95 and D Street.

Encore: (10-10-14) Idaho Transportation Department Director Brian Ness honored by alma mater
Trine University honored Idaho Transportation Department Director Brian Ness, a 1980 alum, with an Outstanding Achievement Award. Ness was recognized for his achievements on Friday (Oct. 3), during a dinner and reception at Trine University based in Angola, Ind. The award is given annually to alumni who have attained a high level of achievement in their profession, are well thought of in their community and who uphold the ideals of Trine University.

Encore: (10-10-2014) Transportation secretary discusses future with UI students
The nation has to change the way it approaches funding transportation infrastructure, U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told a group of students Wednesday (Oct. 1) during a town hall at the University of Idaho. Foxx discussed future transportation policy as well as spotlighted President Barack Obama's GROW AMERICA plan.

Encore: (10-10-14) Public Meeting for Upcoming Broadway Bridge replacement draws 155
A public meeting on the future replacement of the Broadway Bridge spanning the Boise River near Boise State University Oct. 2 drew 155 attendees commenting on the bridge's design, a full-closure versus a partial closure during construction, and how pedestrians and bicyclists would access the Greenbelt, among other proposed changes.

Encore: (10-10-2014) Innovations in Lardo Bridge reconstruction featured by FHWA social media
The innovations involved in the reconstruction of the 83-year-old Lardo Bridge on Idaho 55 on the southwest shore of Payette Lake in McCall have been recognized by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in their social media state-by-state campaign. Ralph L. Wadsworth and Lochner used ITD's conceptual design to complete the bridge design and construct a new bridge that will accommodate one lane of traffic in each direction along with bicycle and pedestrian facilities on each side of the bridge.
