Local commerce, jobs preserved in second phase of Cheyenne South Valley Connector in Pocatello
As crews embark in February on the second phase of a long-awaited project to build an east-west connector between Bannock Highway and South 5th Avenue on the south end of Pocatello, an adjustment from ITD will help preserve and protect local and regional commerce, and sustain local jobs.

Dead deer response earns kudos for Littlefield, ITD
In mid-January, homeowners Bonnie and Bill Willoughby found a dead deer in the yard of their Coeur d’Alene home. How to dispose of the carcass became their top priority. Andrea Littlefield from ITD’s District 1 office played a major role.

I-84 Twin Bridges replacement contract apparent low bid announced, work to begin this spring
The two-year project to replace two Interstate 84 bridges spanning the Snake River will begin later this spring. Among the four bidders for the job to replace the 1,100 foot-long bridges located near the Declo Interchange, the lowest bid price of $17.88 million was submitted by Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction of Draper, Utah.

ITD employees take part in Safety Fest
Idaho Transportation Department employees participated in three days of safety- and health-training courses as part of the 10th Safety Fest of the Great Northwest seminar Jan. 20-23. Hosted in Boise, the event offered some 60 classes covering a wide range of topics that focused on boosting safety in the workplace or work zone.

District staff host open house Feb. 5 for upcoming U.S. 95 Bonners Ferry South Hill project
The public is invited to attend an informational open house Feb. 5 for the upcoming Bonners Ferry South Hill project on U.S. 95. The open house will be held at the National Guard Armory at 6566 Main Street (U.S. 95) in Bonners Ferry, from 3 p.m. and 7 p.m.

National Wear Red Day is Friday so show your support
Heart disease and stroke are no longer problems just for men. Each year, one in three women die of these same causes. National Wear Red Day is Friday, Feb. 6, and serves to remind everyone that women are not immune to cardiac events and that 80 percent of heart disease and stroke can be prevented with education and lifestyle changes.

Encore (01-22-15): The right Powerball ticket
Who hasn’t thought about it? Winning the lottery – or otherwise getting rich. The dream came true for District 6 supply clerk Dave Grende (GRENDee). His dad bought a Powerball ticket in Teton in December. Results of the Dec. 29 drawing matched. $2 million.

Encore (01-22-15): The Power of Networking
Call it the power of networking. The story of Dana Graves’ river rescue on the Lochsa in late November was sent out to more than 300 media members. It was posted on the department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts, garnering another 7,500 views. Then some of those folks shared or re-posted it on their own websites and social media networks, and suddenly tens of thousands of people were seeing the story.

Highway Safety
Encore (01-22-15): New Highway Safety kids calendar honors local teacher
Idaho’s traffic-safety advocates lost a passionate friend last year with the passing of Viola Fernández-Aranguiz, who taught more than 20 years in the Nampa School District. Her legacy was honored with the release of the 2015 Highway Safety Kids Calendar, featuring artwork and highway safety tips straight from the colored crayons, markers and pencils of children throughout Idaho.
