Iconic turquoise building turns 50
ITD’s iconic, turquoise three-story Headquarters building rose from an old farmstead on the rural fringe of Boise in 1961. The spacious 44-acre campus stands apart as an enclave in a neighborhood of developing businesses. Completed 50 years ago this month, the building predated formal creation of the Idaho Transportation Department by 13 years.

Four scenic byway projects to receive federal funds
Half of the eight projects ITD submitted for funding under the FY10 National Scenic Byways Program received federal approval, the Idaho Transportation Board learned last week at its monthly business meeting in Boise. The board approved adding the four projects to FY11 of the Highway Investment Program and to amend the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program accordingly.

Idaho Falls teen gets to know ITD from the inside
In one week Jodee Whittier helped build a city, populate a county and organize a state government. She topped those achievements off by serving briefly as ITD Director. Jodee was part of a contingent of about 260 girls who arrived from all corners of Idaho Sunday to participate in the annual Girls State experience sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.

Brinkman, Schroeder take on new temporary positions
Two individuals who have guided the GARVEE (Grant Anticipation Revenue Vehicle) construction program through its busiest seasons received new appointments this week. GARVEE Program Manager Jason Brinkman will become ITD’s acting Right of Way Manager effective Monday (June 27). Amy Schroeder, who has worked closely with Brinkman the past three years as GARVEE Program Engineer will assume his role as acting program manager.

Goodwill Staffing names ITD region's top employer
When ITD needed temporary workers to cover for employees who were shifted to the Division of Motor Vehicles modernization project and installation of new telephones, it turned to Goodwill Staffing Services. The short-term need was satisfied by temporary employment of 11 individuals in DMV, 11 for the telephone installation project and two employees at District 4 in Shoshone. DMV now has 7.5 Goodwill Staffing Services employees.

ITRMC selects Program Management Ofice for state award
ITD’s new project management process, created as part of its commitment to improve efficiency, has been selected for a state technology award from the Information Technology Resource Management Council (ITRMC). “ITD’s Project Management Office – A Center of Excellence” received the award for Data, Information and Knowledge Management. Teresa K. Luna, chair of the ITRMC council will formally present the award to ITD representatives later.

Impaired driving campaign planned in July
Ensuring safe travel on Idaho highways is a prime reason for high visibility education and enforcement campaigns that target impaired driving, such as one planned statewide June 30 - July 11, which includes the Fourth of July holiday. The effort is part of the department’s commitment to achieve a goal of zero deaths on Idaho highways.

Dwight Horsch appointed to transportation board
Twenty-five years ago Dwight Horsch was concluding his service in the Idaho Legislature where he spent three terns in the House and a single term in the expanded Senate. The businessman/farmer embarked on a new service this month after accepting an invitation to represent District 5 on the Idaho Transportation Board. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter appointed Horsch to succeed Neil Miller on the board.

Rearden rises to top of class in annual 'roadeo'
District 1 produced the top individual while District 3 finished as the top four-person team this week in the state Roadeo finals at the maintenance facility in Athol, north of Coeur d'Alene. Mike Rearden finished nearly 80 points higher than his closest rival to win the individual title Tuesday (June 14).

New members appointed to the Idaho Traffic Safety Commission (ITSC) met last week to review ITD’s Highway Safety Performance Plan. This was the first meeting for many in the group who reviewed and then approved implementing the plan.

New wildlife fence to prommote safety, reduce crashes
An 18-mile fence being installed along Interstate 15 between Pocatello and Inkom in southeastern Idaho will likely reduce the number of collisions with wildlife and make the route safer for motorists, officials say. Officials with Idaho Fish and Game said that at least 100 deer are killed annually on the highway.
