April is distracted driving awareness month, proclamation-signing set for Thursday
April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month so the Idaho Transportation Department and its safety partners encourage motorists to eliminate distractions and keep their attention on the task of safe driving. Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter will sign a proclamation at 10 a.m. Thursday (April 2) at the Statehouse in Boise, designating April 2015 as Distracted Driving Awareness Month in Idaho.

ISP and local law enforcement conduct special enforcement patrols along railways
The Idaho State Police conducted "Trooper on a Train" and "Adopt a Crossing" enforcement operations in cooperation with Operation Lifesaver and the Meridian and Boise Police Departments throughout the Treasure Valley Thursday.

Older Drivers at Peak Levels...and Growing
The U.S Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) announced today that according to new data, people over 50 years old accounted for nearly half of all U.S. drivers in 2013 – more than ever before. A 77-percent increase is expected among drivers over 65 by 2045.

When Director Brian Ness took the reins at ITD in January 2010, he mentioned a goal that has often been repeated in the years since — to become the best transportation department in the country. The Office of Communications now has a way to chart progress toward that goal.

Contracting Services
Grants of up to $60,000 available through April 24 from Idaho ADA Curb Ramp Program
Grants of up to $60,000 are available to organizations statewide through April 24 via the Idaho Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Curb Ramp Program. Local jurisdictions — cities, counties and highway districts — and tribal governments are eligible to submit an application. Funds will be used for construction in 2016

Encore (03-20-15): ITD plans 30 highway construction projects in eastern Idaho this year
ITD plans 30 highway construction projects in eastern Idaho this year. Work on this estimated $12.7 million batch of projects will enhance and preserve state highways, improving safety and ride for motorists. Projects will start once contracts are awarded, construction is arranged and weather allows.

Driver Services
Encore (03-20-15): ITD issues legislative identification cards to members of the House and Senate
In the first week of March, 44 House members and 22 Senators received legislative identification cards from ITD’s Driver Services during a two-day event at the Idaho Statehouse. The department provides this service to the legislative body every two years, and has prepared these IDs for nearly two decades.

Encore (03-20-15): Construction of North Fork Payette Bridge near Cascade begins in April
Reconstruction of the North Fork Payette Bridge along Idaho 55, north of Cascade, will begin in mid-April and wrap up this fall. Previously implemented load restrictions on the old bridge, built in 1950, will be fully lifted with construction of the new bridge.
