Board to visit eastern Idaho in May meeting, discussion of project additions planned
The Idaho Transportation Board will tour eastern Idaho highways and cities during the upcoming board meeting, May 20-21. The meeting includes visiting the Geotourism Center in Driggs, discussing National Summer Transportation Institute projects aiding disadvantaged college students, extending the Snake River Canyon Scenic Byway, and adding a project that funds bicycle counters for safety.

Putting “one foot in front of the other” leads ITD’s Allen to Boston
A good runner typically deals in one of three forms of currency – stride, stamina, or will. Sometimes a runner possesses neither a mile-eating stride nor has freakish endurance, but excels anyway. Steve Allen, a motor vehicle investigator in District 5, falls into that category.

ITD Vault: 29 Years Ago (April 1986): Rain, snowmelt causes $1.7 million in damage
Heavy rains and spring-like temperatures caused an estimated $1.7 million in damage to the highway system in February with widespread flooding and rock slides through much of north central Idaho. Sections of U.S. 95 and State Highway 55 were closed for up to a week.

District 5 intern Denice Wright earns WASHTO scholarship
Denise Wright, a senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering at Idaho State University currently interning in the District 5 office in Pocatello, recently earned a $1,000 scholarship from the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (WASHTO). She carries a 3.25 GPA in her major, with a minor in Math

Almost 1,100 bridges qualify for inspections every four years
For years, the bridge-inspection mantra has been "at least every two years, and more frequently if needed." Now, we can add to that, "and less often, when warranted."

Encore (05-08-01): 30 Years Ago (May 1985): Idaho has fewest potholes in the U.S.
A recent survey of the Road Information Program (TRIP), a Washington, D.C.-based transportation research group, indicates that Idaho has the lowest number of potholes on its 5,000-mile state highway system than any other state.

Encore (05-08-15): Project begins on U.S. 95 Lewiston Hill May 18
A deep pavement rehabilitation will begin May 18 on the U.S. 95 Lewiston Hill, affecting both the north- and southbound lanes through the project’s expected completion in early September. This section of road carries more than 10,000 vehicles per day.

Encore (-05-08-01): Survey shows $1 billion spent, 8 million hours logged and 6 million tons of salt used to battle winter
According to a first-of-its-kind "Winter Maintenance Operations Survey" conducted by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 23 reporting states spent approximately $1.131 billion from October 2014 to mid-April 2015 to pretreat, plow roads or spread chemicals and other materials on roadways to keep them open and operating safely this winter season.
