Transportation board tour of districts begins with District 2 meeting in Grangeville March 23-24
An update on cleanup in the aftermath of the massive Idaho 14 landslide, discussion of the Thorncreek to Moscow U.S. 95 alignment, and review of an incentive grant linked to the Thornton Interchange project will highlight the Idaho Transportation Board’s March 24 meeting in Grangeville. The meeting will begin a day earlier with a tour of area highways.

Construction of Thornton Interchange begins Monday (March 21)
Construction of the Thornton Interchange on U.S. Highway 20 north of Thornton will begin Monday (March 21). The project is scheduled for completion in October. Nearly 20,000 vehicles per day travel through this area now.

Shuttle resumes April 11 for cyclists in I-90 Mullan-to-Montana project
Cyclists will again be shuttled through the I-90 construction zone in northern Idaho as the reconstruction project continues this summer from Mullan to the Montana state line, which includes the popular Lolo Pass recreation area. This unique service is designed to enhance safety through the work zone, which can be particularly dangerous for bicyclists.

Indiana Avenue will close at Karcher Road for two weeks starting today
Indiana Avenue will be closed in both directions just south of Karcher Road beginning today. The closure will be in place 24/7 for two weeks as crews work on irrigation and utilities near the intersection of Karcher and Indiana. Utility work is necessary to prepare for improvements at the intersection this summer.

Southern Idaho bridge work continues, road-work season beginning
Warmer temperatures in southern Idaho mean more than trees budding and grass growing — they also signal the start of another busy year of construction and maintenance on area roadways. While several bridge projects are ongoing from 2015, new work will focus on bridge maintenance and pavement surfacing projects throughout the Magic Valley region.

Vision Zero, the project to reduce traffic-related deaths and severe injuries to zero, is a laudable goal, but achieving it can be daunting. While education campaigns and traffic enforcement can may seem like good options, cities have surprisingly little data on the cause and effect of such measures.

Encore (03-18-16): Rearden’s $60 solution potentially saves thousands for ITD fleet
Mike Rearden’s elegantly simple solution to a time-consuming, tank-loading issue in ITD’s northern Idaho office may eventually save thousands per district as the department adopts the measure statewide. For just $60, his innovation allows a necessary task to be done more quickly, which translates into getting trucks back out on the road more quickly during storms, a direct safety benefit for area drivers.

Encore (03-11-16): Eastern Idaho Railroad helps Thornton project
Hats off to the Eastern Idaho Railroad for letting Rocky Mountain Power run its power line along its right of way instead of making the power company reroute its line through Thornton. This concession enabled the Thornton Interchange project to proceed on schedule and saved ITD approximately $350,000.
