Safer driving means safer work zones. Not just safer for construction workers, but also safer for motorists. April 11-15 is national Work Zone Awareness Week, but awareness extends beyond the week.

Broadway Interchange and Gowen Railroad Bridges project earns ACEC of Idaho Excellence award
The recently completed project to replace the traditional Broadway Interchange with a SPUI structure and replace the railroad bridges leading to Gowen Road, earned a first-place award from the ACEC of Idaho in the Engineering Excellence, Transportation category.

Non-traditional signs in Wood River Valley warn drivers of wildlife crossings
In some areas, wildlife crossing a highway is predictable or frequent enough that a driver may lose the urgency to watch for animals crossing the highway. Then the traditional methods to alert drivers lose effectiveness.

Public Transportation
SICOG, CEDA named regional public transportation outreach coordinators
The Southeast Idaho Council of Governments (SICOG) and the Clearwater Economic Development Association (CEDA) were recently named representatives for regional public transportation charged with eliminating barriers to workforce transportation. They will begin work in May as ITD's outreach coordinators for Idaho's Workforce Transportation Initiative

Pocatello’s South Valley Connector named APWA Rocky Mountain Project of the Year
The long-awaited South Valley Connector project in Pocatello was named the 2016 Project of the Year March 21 by the Rocky Mountain chapter of the American Public Works Association.

ITD loses Ken Clausen, bridge maestro, March 17
Kenneth Duane Clausen, designer of the new Broadway Bridge being constructed over the Boise River near Boise State, died of natural causes March 17 at age 56.

Encore (0401-16): Barrus fills slot as State’s Design/Traffic Engineer in Sablan’s absence
Jesse Barrus will arrive in Boise April 4 to fill the vacancy left by the departure of Kevin Sablan, ITD’s State Design/Traffic Engineer, to Washington, D.C. for a one-year AASHTO fellowship. Barrus earned the position from a statewide candidate pool in a competitive process.
