Cooley’s cost-saving cores also serve vendors
Building on an idea from automotive parts manufacturers, who often give customers a break on the cost of new parts when provided with the old ones that they can turn around and rebuild, Denise Cooley of the Supply Operations section of the ITD District 6 office in Rigby came up with an innovation that not only saves costs for the department but also is a customer-service improvement.

Aeronautics - Innovation
Used lights from large airports illuminate smaller facilities
About every 20 years or so, on average, larger airports in Idaho receive funds from the Federal Aviation Administration to upgrade their lighting systems. In those cases, Idaho's Division of Aeronautics coordinates with the municipality owning the airport to salvage components of runway and taxiway lighting systems. These spare parts, in turn, are donated to smaller airports to meet needs or provide a level of service not known before.

District 5 - Innovation
District simplifies and standardizes seal coating to save significant time for necessary process that protects highways
One of last year’s 275 ITD implemented innovations statewide involves standardizing and simplifying the seal-coating process, an activity that every district performs multiple times each year. District 5, propelled forward by an initiative from an employee in District 2, reduced the amount of time they spent annually to prepare the seal-coat package.

Bringing traffic-control training in-house saves ITD money, provides greater flexibility
For years, ITD has been using Evergreen Safety Council for training of Traffic Control Supervisors, at a cost of approximately $6,400 per class. That cost, for up to 20 students, did not fluctuate — it was no cheaper if there were fewer attendees or even no-shows for the course.

Rojas’ wing dolly makes job simpler and safer
Highway division employees in eastern Idaho have submitted 73 ideas for Innovate ITD! since late 2014, with 25 of them now implemented. The innovations have saved 457 hours of work time and approximately $451,500 in costs. Tony Rojas, of the road maintenance crew in Arco, has been an innovator from the start. One of his first ideas centers on the safety of workers, which is an equally important program goal.
