The Public Transportation summit in Boise in late July provided a few highlights and some takeaways. With more than 70 in attendance, including providers, stakeholders and transit advocates, some valuable insights illuminated a path moving forward.

Simple varnish fix yields big savings
Mechanic Brandon Thurber and colleagues at the District 6 shop lamented that aluminum valves, floor plates, and mounting covers on truck frames needed to be replaced twice a year because of salt corrosion. So, they decided to do something about it. The solution was simple.

ITD projects incorporate best business practices, construction methods
ITD is implementing efficient business practices and construction methods statewide. They include a project to repave Interstate 84 in Canyon County over the course of just four weekends this summer, bridge hydrodemolition on I-15 in eastern Idaho, and a series of projects affecting drivers in the Coeur d'Alene region.

Low-cost magnetic sweeper could save tires, enhance mobility
A simple idea out of District 4 could help prevent flat tires, with a magnetic sweeper mounted to a patrol vehicle. Best of all, the innovation could help more than just ITD employees.

Step into the typical ITD shed and you will find hundreds of tools, parts, and pieces of equipment. Staying on top of the rotating and consumable list of inventory items can be a logistical nightmare, but new business plans are finding efficiencies and improving service.

Division of Administration Innovation Steward Profile: Michelle Doane
Great ideas generated out in the field aren't always getting submitted into the innovation funnel. The main culprit is not an unwillingness, but rather just not knowing how. So to remove that barrier, innovation stewards were added in each district and division to facilitate the submission of ideas.
