Shakin' Up The Backcountry
As ITD watched the snow accumulate in the Central Mountains of Idaho on March 31, we wondered if this would be the storm to shut down Highway 21. The snow subsided after around 27 inches of beautiful new white fluff came down. Every year, that much snow brings the strong possibility of avalanches onto the roadway along the Canyon Creek section of ID-21 from Grandjean to Banner Summit, and sure enough, that section closed. What happened next was impressive.

The Idaho State Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) communication system is being decommissioned. Surveys show that the 511 Traveler Service or roadside electronic message boards are now used far more often.

Safety Corner
Adopt-a-Highway litter pick-up and volunteer programs suspended during pandemic
ITD has suspended the Adopt-a-Highway and other volunteer programs to focus on essential services and promote community safety. Under the program, volunteers adopt a small section of highway for two years at a time and commit to removing litter twice a year.
