ITD Director Brian Ness recently spoke on the TraffiCalm podcast and used the platform to discuss several issues of safety impacting today's highway workers. D1's Proud Papa Thompson knows a thing or two about first female stealth pilot sent into combat
America recently deployed its first female stealth fighter pilot into combat. Captain Emily Thompson, call sign “Banzai,” became the first female to fly the F-35A Lightning II into combat over Afghanistan in June. She also had an all-female maintenance crew to launch her historic flight. Emily is the daughter of District 1 Port of Entry Inspector Bill Thompson.

Pay Increases Approved for Targeted Positions
In an earlier Direct from the Director, it was announced the Idaho Transportation Board approved pay increases for targeted positions. I am pleased to announce all four components of the compensation plan have been approved by the Division of Financial Management and Division of Human Resources.

Trish Whitney retiring Thursday after 45 years of state service
A familiar face around ITD for the last four decades, Trish Whitney will call it quits Thursday (July 16). Whitney leaves big shoes to fill — shoes that have probably put in more miles on and around the ITD Headquarters campus than just about anyone else during that time, whether it was organizing and taking care of the blood-donation services here, or just plain walking.

McElhinney brings safety focus, customer-service mindset to new role as ITD’s Chief Operations Officer
Dan McElhinney, who has worked in the transportation field for more than three decades, managing numerous high-profile projects, will become ITD’s new Chief Operations Officer on August 10. McElhinney comes to ITD after 32 years with from the California Department of Transportation.

ITD adopts new guidance regarding use of electronic devices in department vehicles
ITD has issued new guidance for employees. Administrative Policy 5558 governs use of electronic devices while driving and operating ITD vehicles and equipment. The new guidance was approved by the Idaho Transportation Board at their June 17 meeting.

Lava's massive boulder, rest area status, hands-free law to highlight board’s July meeting
The July 16 meeting of the Idaho Transportation Board will be held in Pocatello at the Idaho State Police office at 5255 South Fifth Avenue. The meeting will feature an update on the Snake River View Rest Area at the Idaho/Oregon border, a discussion of the state's new hands-free law, and a review of the funding request to mitigate for the rock fall in late June at Lava Hot Springs.
