Zarate rides away after 32 years with ITD
Luis Zarate rode away from ITD on Oct. 7 after 32 years with the department, although he will continue on the books until the end of the year officially. He spent all of his career with the Headquarters Bridge section. Zarate’s daughter, Janet, is a Materials Engineer in D2 Design & Construction in Lewiston, continuing the family legacy with the agency.

$19M federal grant, review of 80-mph speed limit and economic emergency permits highlight upcoming board meeting
Discussion of the $19 million grant for the Aht’Wy Interchange project, annual review of the 80-mph speed limit increase, and review of economic emergency permits will be highlighted during the October 15 Idaho Transportation Board meeting in Coeur d’Alene. The meeting will start at 9:30 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time.

DMV
DMV and county assessors prepare to update vehicle registration and titling system
If you visit the DMV at ITD headquarters right now, you’ll quickly see it is all hands on deck getting ready for the GEM Vehicles launch. After this Columbus Day weekend, Idaho’s vehicle registration and titling will operate on a new computer system. It’s the third phase of the DMV’s modernization project, moving from a 1980s mainframe to the updated GEM system.

Safety Corner
Idaho ShakeOut Oct. 15 is reminder to prepare
On October 15, ITD will participate in the Great ShakeOut, which is an earthquake drill to reinforce preparedness, at work and home. For those who think they need not prepare, you only need to look back to the spring’s 6.5-magnitude quake to realize it is better safe than sorry. The goals of the exercise, planned for 10:15 a.m., are straightforward:
