first few months of 2007 were filled with
discussions about where the department
and Idaho’s transportation system
are headed. Many of those discussions
came when we presented ITD’s budget,
a special revenue request and our GARVEE
program to the state Legislature.

Tour
confirms commitment of ITD employees
Although
separated by miles of highways, ITD employees
are united in their passion to do their jobs well
and efficiently. That was the perception a management
team returned with from a tour of department operations
in nearly every corner of Idaho. Surprising? No,
insists new Deputy Director L. Scott Stokes. Reassuring?

forwards Interim Strategic Plan to governor
The Idaho Transportation Department’s primary
role is to “develop and operate a safe, efficient
transportation system that meets the needs of the
traveling public and supports Idaho’s economic
prosperity.” Director Pam Lowe provided that
reminder as part of an introduction to the department’s
Interim 2008 Strategic Plan that was submitted to
the governor’s office last week.

DeThomas
ready to tackle aeronautics challenges
John DeThomas earned a bachelor’s degree
from the Naval Academy, a master’s from
the Naval Postgraduate School, provided aviation
support in the Vietnam War, served as a military
test pilot, became chief of flight operations
for two aviation firms and served as director
of flight training for a national university.
But he’s discovered there is something he
is not very good at.

ITD employees touch the lives of Idahoans every
day in every part of the state, from maintaining
and improving highways to processing driver’s
licenses and vehicle records, inspecting and licensing
commercial vehicles, managing and improving airports,
and assisting with the development of public transportation.
Next week has been set aside to honor their contributions
during Employee Appreciation Week.

Relief
on the way for I-84 travelers east of Boise
The distance between Boise and Bliss will get a
little shorter, beginning next week. Or so it might
seem for travelers in need of a break along the
way. The Blacks Creek Rest Area will reopen Monday
with new facilities after being closed for improvements.
A ribbon cutting ceremony will begin at 2 p.m. on
the Interstate 84 eastbound side of the rest area,
located 10 miles east of Boise.

COMPASS
collecting awards for planning efforts
Community Planning Association of Southwest Idaho
(COMPASS) announced this week that it had received
a number of prestigious awards for its regional
transportation effort, “Communities in Motion:
Regional Long-Range Transportation Plan 2030,"
including an award from the Idaho Transportation
Department.

Employees
will see no increase in insurance premiums
For the third consecutive year, increases in health
insurance will be assumed by the state, announced
Rick Thompson, administrator of Insurance and
Internal Support for the Idaho Department of Administration.
Thompson and Cynthia Ness, manager of the employee
benefit program, provided details of the state’s
health insurance program Thursday in two sessions
at ITD Headquarters. A series of meetings will
continue through May 11.

E. Longenecker, a

Planning Manager, passed away Saturday (April
28) in Boise at the age of 81.
