Economic hub concept explained to board

Transportation will play an important role in a proposed initiative to connect northern Idaho and eastern Washington into a global marketplace. The concept incorporates the highway and rail international border crossing at Eastport, the Port of Lewiston, the Spokane International Airport, and portions of U.S. 95, U.S. 395 and Interstate 90. Idaho Transportation Department staff discussed the concept with board members Aug. 16 during the board’s monthly business meeting, held in Coeur d’Alene.

Caution, patience urged on holiday weekend
Motorists heading out for a long Labor Day weekend in Idaho should find highways unrestricted by construction projects, but could encounter firefighting traffic as crews battle major wildfires in central Idaho. Highway construction activity is suspended beginning Friday afternoon and continuing through Labor Day - Monday.

Western Idaho Fair: All it's cracked up to be
A demonstration of traffic safety at the Western Idaho State Fair in Boise broke eggs faster than hens could lay them. Representatives from ITD’s Office of Highway Operations and Safety and the Idaho Division of the Federal Highway Administration placed raw eggs in a toy car then sent them hurtling to their untimely end.

What’s the difference between 5-1-1 and 9-1-1? One provides emergency assistance, the other travel information. Confuse the two through inattentive dialing and you’re likely to get more immediate attention than you expected.

Farewell to a friend
Jim Roletto began working for ITD on May 21, 1984. He was hired on as an hourly worker in Wallace. On his first day of work, he managed to wreck his boss’s vehicle when the crew he was working on asked the “new guy” to go get them drinks. It’s a great story… ask Jim to tell you. It’s too long for this newsletter.

Annual bicycle race to traverse Idaho highways
An endurance bicycle race that begins in Utah and terminates in Wyoming will bring 1,000 riders and their families to a route that cuts through southeast Idaho Sept. 8. The 25th annual LOTOJA Classic – Logan (Utah) to Jackson (Wyo.) – began with a small group of college friends at Utah State University and has become one of the nation’s premier cycling races.

Session to present information on retirement
A representative of Nationwide Investment Services, will explain retirement options during two sessions Sept. 5 at Headquarters in Boise. John Carver specializes in the State of Idaho Deferred Compensation Plan, a tax-deferred plan for state employees. Carver will help employees determine how far their pension and Social Security will stretch and options how to make up the difference.

Wildfires
Castle Rock fire still threatening Sun Valley area
Fire crews successfully completed burnout operations in the Warm Springs area of the Castle Rock fire near Ketchum Thursday. The burnout halted the spread of the backing fire further east toward Ketchum. Smoke from interior burns was still visible from points throughout the valley.

ITD to participate in Sept. 8 Career Fair
ITD is stepping up efforts to attract qualified, motivated professions to fill the positions it has available. In an effort to attract applicants, representatives of ITD’s Human Resource Services will join other public departments and agencies at the sixth annual Law Enforcement Career Fair and Public Safety Day Sept. 8 in Boise.

Attention, anticipation key to safety around schools
Bicycle and pedestrian lanes, playgrounds, yellow buses and classrooms return to life this fall as children from Port Hill to Fort Hall make the annual pilgrimage back to school. Motorists who have grown accustomed to sailing undeterred through school zones the past three months need to renew their vigilance around schools.

New program encourages students to walk, bike
As summer fades and children prepare for a new school year, Idaho's First Lady Lori Otter urges parents to revive an old tradition - encouraging children to walk or bike to school regularly. Mrs. Otter wants schools and parents to put Oct. 3 on their calendars and to organize a walking event for "International Walk to School Day."

Patrols focuses on impaired driving
ITD reminds drivers that law enforcement agencies in Idaho and across the nation will be working overtime through the Labor Day weekend to catch and arrest impaired drivers. At least 30 Idaho law enforcement agencies are expected to participate in the statewide overtime enforcement campaign that begins today (Aug. 24) and continues through Sept. 4.

511 Survey seeks ideas from commercial vehicle drivers
Two years after the Idaho Transportation Department launched the 511 Traveler Information phone system and the 511.idaho.gov Web site, the service is ready for a major upgrade. In preparation for rolling out the new generation, ITD wants input from a segment of the traveling public that depends on Idaho’s highways for their livelihood – commercial vehicle operators.
