511 Traveler Information Service coming to Idaho
ITD will soon launch Idaho’s 511 traveler information service, using state-of-the-art technology to provide road and weather information by phone and Internet. Travelers can connect to the service by calling three easy-to-remember digits (5-1-1) or logging on to 511.idaho.gov

McCall fire truck helps christen new bridge
More than 60 people joined Idaho Transportation Board Chairman Chuck Winder and ITD Director Dave Ekern for a ceremony to dedicate two recently completed projects in McCall. The event was held on the new bridge over the North Fork of the Payette River that is the centerpiece of the East-West Loop.

Board to consider Capital Investment Program
ITD staff will present the FY06-10 Capital Investment Program, which includes projects for all modes, to the transportation board when it meets in Boise next week (Sept. 22-23). The two-day meeting will be at the District 3 office on Chinden Boulevard and will include a tour of several district projects or proposed projects.

Traveling the Road to a Bright Horizon
Administrative assistants from ITD’s six districts gained a clearer perspective on the transportation department and how they contribute to its success when they participated in an all-day workshop “On the Road to a Bright Horizon.” The Sept. 15 workshop was at the Nazareth Retreat Center in Boise.

ITD garners two national awards at public affairs workshop
The Idaho Transportation Department received top awards from the National Transportation Public Affairs Workshop for the recent redesign of its Internet Web site and for its innovative use of Web technology to deliver a weekly newsletter to employees. Awards were announced Saturday (Sept. 10) at the workshop in Rehoboth Beach, Del.

AASHTO rail conference draws record numbers

The Idaho Transportation Department welcomed a record number of participants last month for the 2005 national meeting of the AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) Standing Committee on Rail Transportation (SCORT).

Workshops focus on biodiesel alternative
The arrival of Hurricane Katrina and the blow it delivered on gasoline prices nationwide also triggered renewed interest in finding cheaper energy sources. Researchers and transportation officials in Idaho already were ahead of the storm surge. A weeklong workshop in Boise this week focuses on the future of biodiesel as an alternative to traditional fossil fuel.

The soaring cost of gasoline has rekindled an interest by Americans in alternative fuel sources. The work of University of Idaho chemist Gus Davico may lead the way for liquid methanol to become a realistic alternative to petroleum.
