Ekern
named
to
AASHTO
groups
ITD
Director
Dave
Ekern
was
appointed
to
positions
on
American
Association
of
State
Highway
and
Transportation
Officials
(AASHTO)
planning
groups
during
the
annual
meeting
in
Philadelphia
recently.
Ekern
was
named
chair
of
the
Subcommittee
on
Information
Systems
and
was
selected
for
membership
on
the
Special
Committee
on
Joint
Development.
AASHTO
is
a
a
nonprofit,
nonpartisan
association
representing
highway
and
transportation
departments
in
the
50
states,
the
District
of
Columbia
and
Puerto
Rico.
It
represents
all
five
transportation
modes:
air,
highways,
public
transportation,
rail
and
water.
Its
primary
goal
is
to
foster
the
development,
operation
and
maintenance
of
an
integrated
national
transportation
system.

Children
share
their
walk
to
school
When
hundreds
of
Idaho
children
left
their
homes
Wednesday
for
a
regular
walk
or
bike
ride
to
school,
they
were
uncharacteristically
joined
by
a
band
of
adults.
Together
they
forsook
motorized
transportation
and
used
their
own
energy
to
reach
the
school
grounds.
The
international
Walk
to
School
event
is
used
as
an
educational
experience
in
which
adults
provide
firsthand
tips
on
safely
walking
to
and
from
school.
But
there
are
a
number
of
related
benefits
for
children.

phase
A
core
team
charged
with
directing
ITDs
transition
to
a
new
financial
management
system
celebrated
the
conclusion
of
the
first
major
phase
last
week
and
took
a
collective
breath
before
launching
into
the
next
phase.
Approximately
halfway
through
the
15-month
process,
the
transition
team
concentrated
in
the
envision
phase
on
identifying
gaps
between
present
ITD
processes
and
capabilities
of
the
new
Advantage
3
package
from
American
Management
Systems
(AMS).

traffic
fatalities
Imagine
one
day
with
zero
traffic
deaths.
That
is
what
safety
officials
are
asking
Americans
to
do
as
part
of
the
Put
the
Brakes
on
Fatalities
Day
safety
campaign,
observed
annually
on
Oct.
10.
After
a
steady
20-year
decline,
the
number
of
traffic
fatalities
in
America
increased
to
43,005
in
2003.
That
equals
about
116
fatalities
every
day,
or
one
fatality
every
13
minutes.

said
state
officials
must
work

transportation

the

University

Idaho
undergraduate
students
will
work

faculty
this
year
on
transportation
engineering
projects
funded

the
Idaho
Transportation

American
Trucking

paid
internships
were
awarded
through
UI's

Institute

Advanced
Transportation
