Idahy becomes ICON Credit Union, but mission remains same

It was 1952. Harry S. Truman was President of the United States. The transistor radio, polio vaccine and the “pill” were introduced. Bread cost 16 cents.

And seven employees of the Idaho Department of Highways pooled their resources (a total of $35) to form a credit union primarily for employees in Idaho’s transportation sector.

Idahy was born.

Idahy enters a new year and a new decade with a new name – ICON Credit Union, but its commitment to members and its range of services remain unchanged. (See questions and answers related to the transition.)

The credit union has evolved steadily the past 57 years, and today serves more than 14,000 members that are either ITD employees or their family members, or are from other employer groups throughout Idaho or residents of 11 Boise neighborhoods. Based in Boise, with five branches in northern and central Idaho and La Grande, Ore., the credit union has assets of more than $114 million.

In December of 2008, Idahy's members voted to convert to an Idaho State Charter. The Idaho State Charter provides more opportunity for consumers to join Idahy and enjoy the many benefits of being an Idahy member.

The member-owned, democratically operated cooperative offers personalized financial services as an alternative to the for-profit financial sector. It is directed by volunteers and staffed by professionals. Pat Marler, who retired last year from ITD’s Division of Planning, is chairman of the credit union's board of directors.
