ITD presents budget request to JFAC
ITD Director Pam Lowe outlined the department’s
budget request for Fiscal Year 2008 and authorization
for a second round of GARVEE (Grant Anticipation
Revenue Vehicle) bonds during a 31⁄2-hour
presentation to the Joint Finance and Appropriations
Committee Thursday.

of Transportation Director Pamela Lowe told lawmakers
Thursday, as she defended her agency's budget
request for nearly $790 million in fiscal year
2008. It includes $264 million in bond proceeds
for the second installment of Connecting Idaho,
the largest road-building project in state history.

unveils plan to battle avalanches
One of Idaho's popular recreation routes soon
will have fewer road closures resulting from
avalanches. ITD received a special use permit
from the U.S. Forest Service to use explosives
to reduce avalanche hazards along Idaho 21 between
Grandjean Junction and Banner Summit.

to fewer impaired drivers on Idaho highways.

Vehicle/highway
technology to take center stage
ITD
will sponsor a demonstration of the VII Roadshow
March 1 in Meridian. The demonstration will
unveil the latest advancements in automobile
and highway technology. The demonstration
will begin with a 1 p.m. introduction and
news conference at the Idaho State Police
driving track near the POST Academy. The event
is free and open to anyone interested in automotive
and ITS technology.

Technology
to be displayed at Capitol
The
transportation department will share its use of
technology with legislators and guests at the Idaho
Capitol as part of Digital Government Day on Feb.
14. ITD’s display will include a demonstration
of the new Automated Driver’s License Testing
system, on-line ordering of specialized license
plates and a continuous PowerPoint presentation
on how the department uses technology to better
serve Idaho citizens.

STIP available
ITD’s guide to construction projects through
2011, the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program
(STIP), is now available. The STIP identifies approximately
$1 billion in transportation-related projects planned
for construction through the year 2011, plus those
planned for the first two years of the Connecting
Idaho program as authorized by the Idaho Legislature.

BPA offers advice to parents of teenagers
Business Psychology Associates, the
state’s employee assistance program provider
offers simple advice for parents coping with the adolescent
and young adult states of their offspring. “Parents
struggle with children between the ages of 12 and
20 more than at any other time in a young person's
life,” according to a BPA report this month.

Governor
names new board member for District 1
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter appointed Jim
Coleman of Hayden to the Idaho Transportation Board.
He succeeds John McHugh of Post Falls. Coleman was
appointed to the District 1 seat on the seven-member
Idaho Transportation Board in January. He will represent
the state’s five northernmost counties. His
term expires in 2013. A civil engineer, Coleman worked
for 30 years with J-U-B Engineers Inc. -- including
15 years as the company’s president and CEO.
He retired in 2005 to open his own consulting firm.
