Reaction to President Bush’s nomination of Idaho
Gov. Dirk Kempthorne as the 49th Secretary of the
Interior has been swift and positive from Washington,
D.C. Idaho’s Congressional delegates enthusiastically
endorse his nomination.

Idaho to receive nearly $1 million for scenic byways
Seven
of Idaho’s renowned scenic byways will be
enhanced by the infusion of nearly $1 million from
the Federal Highway Administration as part of funding
announced recently by U.s. Transportation Secretary
Norman Y. Mineta. Idaho’s seven project grants
are part of FHWA’s National Scenic Byways
Program, which recognized and enhances selected
highway routes based on their archaeological, cultural,
historic, natural, recreational or scenic qualities.

New
publication focuses on bicycle safety
ITD’s Bicycle Coordinator, the ACHD Bicycle
Advisory Committee, and several cycling advocates
around the state collaboratively revised and customized
a general bicycle safety manual, “Bicycling
Street Smarts,” published by Bicycling Magazine
and Rodale, Inc. Idaho Bicycling Street Smarts is
now available to bicycle riders throughout Idaho.

1's Munden named Maintenance Person of Year
Greg Munden, a 29-year veteran of the Idaho Transportation
Department, was named the Maintenance Person of
the Year and honored with a plaque during the semiannual
employee service awards ceremony in Boise this week.

6 committee receives safety award
ITD and the Division of Highways departed from tradition
when considering an appropriate recipient of the
2005 Safety Person of the Year award. Reflecting
the level of commitment required to make the District
6 safety program so successful, the department settled
not on a “safety person” but on a cadre
of 10 individuals who collectively deserved the
honor.

board, ITD honor employees for service
The Idaho Transportation Board focused its attention
on 74 individuals who reached new milestones in
their careers at the transportation department when
it met Thursday in Boise. Among the honored employees
were two individuals – Sherwin Beaman and
Milford Miller – who have logged more than
40 years with the department.

Seven
retirees honored Thursday
Seven ITD employees who brought long and distinguished
careers to a close in the last half of 2005 (July
through December) were honored Thursday during the
semiannual service awards ceremony at Headquarters
in Boise Combined, they represented nearly two centuries
(197 years) of experience, wisdom and service.

Proposed Toasmasters
Club would improve public speaking
Most people spend the first two years of life learning
how to talk and the remainder of their lives striving
to do it better. Ranked near the top of nearly everyone’s
list of most intimidating, stressful endeavors is
public speaking. Yet, even during the age of electronic
communication, there has never been a time when
speaking – articulate, persuasive speaking
– carries greater importance.

conference scheduled March 27-30
Transportation
officials from throughout the western U.S. will
meet in Boise March 27-30 for the annual WASHTO
(Western Association of State Highway Transportation
Officials) conference, hosted by the Idaho Transportation
Department.
