Although
the vehicles are much different, and the ride will be
smoother and faster, participants in a transcontinental
convoy will share the same ideals as their predecessors
half a century ago. Participants in the cross-country
convoy that began Thursday collectively are bringing
national attention to the need for a modern, efficient
transportation network to unite the United States.

Interstate convoy hits the road
As you all know, the "Celebrate
the Interstate!" Cross-Country Convoy is underway!
The 40-some convoy participants, including several AASHTO
staff members, several state DOT representatives, sponsors,
and others, arrived in San Francisco on Tuesday, June
13, and are participating in a series of preliminary
logistical meetings.

Board
to consider initial FY '08 budget proposal
The
Idaho Transportation Board will begin its monthly meeting
in Rigby next week by reviewing the department’s
FY '08 budget proposal. The workshop is scheduled for
Tuesday (June 20). Federal funds for the next fiscal year
are estimated at just over $300 million, and state revenue
is forecast at $226.5 million.

Veterans
unite in highway cleanup effort
Members of an Arco veterans group use regular highway
cleaning campaigns as a way of staying united. And occasionally
they use the cleanups to reunite lost items with their
rightful owners. In 16 years of litter patrols on U.S.
20 in eastern Idaho, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post
7137 has gathered more than seven tons of refuse (14,805
pounds).

Short-term
merit increases to expire June 30
ITD employees who
qualified for and have been receiving short-term merit
increases since February will receive the last one on
their June 30 paycheck. The Transportation Board authorized
the short-term merit increases in January; the increases
began to appear on employee paychecks with the February
24 pay date.

State ushers in new pay grade structure
The Idaho Division of Human Resources has designed a new
pay grade structure in response to legislative direction
contained in H844 earlier this year. The pay range for
each state classified job, including those at the transportation
department, will change from a schedule based solely on
Hay Points to a combination of Hay Points and Market Average
salary survey data.

Fitness challenge nears end of road
The I-Fitness exercise challenge
that celebrates the Interstate's 50th Anniversary ends
on Saturday (June 24). Participants need to have exercised
at least 30 hours during the 10-week challenge in order
to earn their incentive. Log sheets are due to your team
captain by June 28.

law enforcement target aggressive drivers
Tailgating, quick lane changes, running yellow lights,
speeding or ignoring traffic signs and signals are telltale
characteristics of an aggressive driver, according to
the Office of Traffic and Highway Safety. Aggressive driving
injures and kills more people each year than any other
driving behavior.

Lolo
Pass center receives state honor
Clearwater National Forest representatives
accepted an award naming Lolo Pass the 2006 State of Idaho
Visitor Center of the Year at the Idaho Governor's Conference
on Recreation and Tourism held in Lewiston in mid-May.
Lolo Pass, a unique area at the state line between Idaho
and Montana along U.S. Highway 12, offers a rest area
for travelers and an interpretive center, nature trail,
picnic sites and interpretive programs for tourists.
