The transportation department has completed efficiency measures initiated during the leadership of former director Dwight Bower and continues to identify and refine efficiencies that will improve the delivery of transportation services, Director Pam Lowe said.

Idaho wildfires
Airstrip still open, but not recommended; harmonica festival canceled

The Johnson Creek airstrip, a popular interim destination for accessing Yellow Pine and the high mountains east of Cascade remains open despite a nearby forest fire. But travel into and out of the grass strip is not recommend, ITD's Division of Aeronautics said today (Friday, Aug. 3).

Stage 2 fire restrictions issued for northern Idaho
The Idaho Department of Lands implemented Stage 2 fire restrictions, effective at 12:01 a.m. today, for all state and private lands within northern Idaho. The area includes the counties of Boundary, Bonner, Kootenai, Shoshone, Benewah, Latah, Nez Perce, Clearwater, Lewis and Idaho (north of the Salmon River).

Man charged with lifting engine from ITD plane crash
A man is facing federal charges accusing him of taking an engine from the site of a plane crash that killed a pilot, a Department of Juvenile Corrections officer and a teenager in the Idaho wilderness five years ago. Robert Allen Lloyd is charged in U.S. District Court with picking up and dropping off material by helicopter in a forest wilderness.

ITD to participate in Sept. 8 career fair
The Idaho Transportation Department is stepping up efforts to attract qualified, motivated professions to fill the positions it has available. In an effort to attract applicants, representatives of ITD’s Human Resource Services will join other public departments and agencies at the sixth annual Law Enforcement Career Fair and Public Safety Day Sept. 8 in Boise.

Department of Insurance to sponsor health screening
The Idaho Department of Insurance will join other public and private partners in offering a comprehensive health screening Aug. 13 in Nampa. IDI’s Senior Health Insurance Benefits Advisors, Blue Cross of Idaho (the state’s health insurance provider) and Medicare and Medicaid Services will jointly sponsor “Operation Prevention” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nampa Civic Center.

ITD to begin implementing Practical Design concept
ITD has introduced a new process to simplify design of construction projects to achieve maximum benefit for its financial investment. Director Pam Lowe outlined her vision for Practical Design in a detailed memo to district engineers last week, calling for designs that maintain project quality and integrity, but at the same time reducing costs.

ITD sends five buses to social service agencies
The parking lot near ITD’s Division of Public Transportation office at Headquarters looked a little different this week. Two small transport buses, painted a brilliant yellow, a brown bus and a white bus stood out among staff vehicles in the parking lot Tuesday morning awaiting delivery to anxious recipients.
