few hundred guests drop in for McCall event
Smoke-filled
skies didn’t hinder the enthusiasm of pilots
who flew to
McCall
for the annual Fly-In, sponsored by the Idaho Transportation
Department’s Division of Aeronautics, Aug.
12-14. Wildfires from eastern Washington and north-central
Idaho generated enough smoke to create a foggy haze
over the McCall area as the Fly-In was taking off.

to host national AASHTS rail conference
The
Idaho Transportation Department will welcome rail
passenger and freight authorities from throughout
the country Aug. 28-31 for an annual conference on
rail transportation issues. The 39th annual Standing
Committee on Rail Transportation (SCORT) is a committee
of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation
Officials (AASHTO).

of project, beginning of the trail
Sir Winston Churchill, delivering
a commence address, once said, “this is not
the beginning of the end, but the end of the beginning.”
Words that easily could be adapted and applied to
the Greater Blackfoot Area Greenbelt. About 60 people
turned out Wednesday to mark the end of an eight-year
process to construct a recreational trail near Interstate
15 in Blackfoot.

process gains AASHTO recognition
Idaho’s
futuristic journey into the transportation needs of
2030 was more than an exercise in planning –
it was a model of public participation. A two-year
process to identify the state’s transportation
needs for a new generation of users recently caught
the attention of the American Association of State
Highway and Transportation Officials.

Guardsman honors supervisor
While
it’s appropriate to thank those
who serve in the military, Glen Samuelson
figured it was just as fitting to return
the thanks to those who make service possible.
Samuelson, a sergeant major in the Idaho
Army National guard, was called to leave
his position at ITD’s bridge design
briefly last year to help facilitate the
deployment of Guardsmen to Iraq.

conference to focus on 'sustainability'
University of
Idaho leaders and researchers will bring
together regional experts, elected officials
and community members in the first local
sustainable transportation conference Thursday,
Sept. 22, and Friday, Sept. 23, at the Idaho
Commons building. The National Institute
for Advanced Transportation Technology's
Sustainability Conference will present the
opportunity for groups to work together
on transportation problems of local and
regional interest.
