5 to experiment with salt-only snow treatment
ITD crews in the Montpelier, Preston and Malad areas will
use a different method of winter maintenance on selected
highways entering from Utah and Wyoming this winter. Depending
on the prevailing weather conditions and temperature,
salt may be used exclusively or combined with small amounts
of sanding material.

Welder honored for snow plow invention in District 1
Jerry Brown, one of 13 employees in
the District 1 shop, recently thought of a way to improve
an ITD snow plow blade, make it more resistant to the
rigors of the road and reduce repair costs. The innovative
idea proved to be a tremendous success.The welder was
honored Sept. 22 for devising a new bumper system, mounted
on the side of the snow plow box, that protects the
truck box and body from being damaged each time the
wing plow is raised.

Students put feet to their education
Gov. Jim Risch joined parents, school administrators,
teachers and students this week in a short walk to Koelsch
Elementary School in Boise. They were among dozens of
schools statewide participating in the International
Walk to School event that promotes walking or bicycling.

Hall of Fame to induct three
A Medal of Honor recipient,
an Idaho aviation leader and a former U.S. ambassador
to the council of the International Civil Aviation Organization
will be inducted into the Idaho Aviation Hall of Fame
this month. The Hall of Fame will honor retired Army
Maj. Ed Freeman, Bob Hoff and Ed Stimpson during a Hall
of Fame induction dinner Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 6 p.m.
in the Boise River Room on the third floor of the Boise
Air Terminal rotunda.

Webmaster to help plan new Web goals, objectives
ITD Webmaster Steve Jackson will lead an initiative
to establish new goals and objectives for the use of
the Web as an internal and external communications tool.
Jackson also will lead the establishment of a department-wide
Web Council that to take a broad and systematic view
of our internet presence.

Employees
urged to embrace 'Drive Safely Work Week'
Only the few ITD employees who have
the luxury of living close enough to walk or bicycle
to their office avoid the daily commutes, dealing with
congestion and the associated risks. This week a national
organization encourages those who drive to work to do
so safely and share the ideals of Drive Safely Work
Week (Oct. 2-6).

charitable campaign runs Oct. 2-27
If you want someone to know that you really care, you
have to show it rather than say it. ITD and other state
employees have an opportunity to put their care into
action by participating in the annual “United
We Care” charitable giving campaign that begins
Monday (Oct. 2) and continues through Oct. 27.
