Presidential

Americans
owe a great debt of gratitude to those who have
sacrificed for our liberty and for the security
of our Nation. We express deep appreciation to
our veterans -- the men and women who stepped
forward when America needed them, triumphed over
brutal enemies, liberated continents, and answered
the prayers of millions around the globe.

It's
not just another day off
A time of reflection;
a time of sorrow; a time of rejoicing. ITD joins
other state and federal agencies in observing
Veteran’s Day on Friday, Nov. 11. But it’s
more than another day off, an opportunity for
a three-day weekend, a prelude to the holidays.

Board
to review policies of Highway Program
ITD
staff will conduct an interactive work session Wednesday
afternoon with board members as the first part of
the board’s November meeting. The workshop will
be in the conference room at Aeronautics in Boise.
A review of current polices related to highway programs
– such as Safety Rest Areas and the Enhancement
Program – will initiate the discussion.

Partners
begin forming details of Connecting Idaho
Connecting Idaho, the innovative
program to transform Idaho’s transportation
system, took a major step recently with selection
of Washington Group International and CH2M HILL as
private-sector partners. The pace will quicken in
the next few weeks as ITD and the Connecting Idaho
Partners add substance and form to their relationship
and prepare to deliver a formal request to the Idaho
Legislature.

Large
e-mail files create concern, prompt caution
The
size and complexity of incoming and out-going ITD
e-mail has grown considerably the past 18 months and
is beginning to strain the department’s storage
capacity, explains Susan Simmons, administrator of
the Division of Administration.

Statewide
'Click It' campaign to be launched Monday
Motorists
will have an extra incentive to buckle
up beginning Monday (Nov. 14), when a
statewide safety campaign, including stepped-up
enforcement and education, gets under
way. The Idaho State Police, Idaho Transportation
Department and about 30 local law enforcement
agencies are participating in the "Click
It, Don't Risk It!" seat belt campaign.

Reconciliation:
Good for community transit
Congress is considering
legislation that is intended to rein in
federal spending and reduce the budget deficits
that have accumulated over the past few
years. The House version of this "budget
reconciliation" bill contains provisions
that break new ground in recognizing the
essential value of public and community
transportation to our nation's lower income
families.

Craig questions oil company executives
Idaho
Senator Larry Craig, a member of the Senate
Energy and Natural Resources Committee,
drilled oil executives in a hearing this
week regarding gas and diesel prices in
Idaho. Recently, oil companies announced
record quarterly profits, while gasoline,
natural gas, and diesel prices are at record
highs.

Crapo looks for ag transportation solutions
Idaho farm families
need solutions for the limited availability
of affordable shipping and increasing production
costs, Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo, a member of
the Senate Agriculture Committee, reiterated
this week in a Senate Agriculture Committee
hearing. The hearing addressed long-term
needs in regards to energy issues and transportation
for agriculture.
