Innovative pavement crack-sealing method unveiled by D3
There are pavement-maintenance tasks that the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) performs each year to maintain the 12,000 miles of the state highway system and meet smoothness and driveability standards. ITD always explores ways to perform these measures in a more cost-effective method, saving the department and taxpayers money. If the innovation also requires fewer employees and uses less equipment, that's even better.

AASHTO Board of Directors urges congress to immediately ensure Highway Trust Fund solvency
The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials Board of Director passed a resolution that calls upon Congress to ensure the solvency of the nation's Highway Trust Fund this summer, before the Federal Highway Administration is forced to begin delaying reimbursements to states for transportation work underway.

Study shows that teenagers often copycat others who drink and drive
If you want to make sure your teenager doesn't drive while intoxicated, you might want to start by making sure he or she doesn't go riding with peers who have been drinking or using drugs. That's the message of a new study that found that older high school students are much more likely to drive under the influence if they've ridden with intoxicated friends.

Strategic Highway Research Program
Millions in SHRP2 implementation assistance available to state DOTs, others
The application process is now open for approximately $12 million in technical and financial assistance to implement 12 products developed through the second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2). For the first time, products from all four focus areas – including safety – will be available through the Implementation Assistance Program (IAP), jointly sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and the Federal Highway Administration.

MADD to hold "Mother of All Walks" fundraiser
It's not too late to join the 2014 Walk Like MADD or MADD dash planned for Saturday, June 14 at Veteran's Park in Boise. Teams are still forming for the annual fundraiser to benefit Mothers Against Drunk Driving and that organization's efforts to prevent impaired driving.

Idaho State Police participate in Roadcheck 2014 to reduce commercial vehicle crashes
The Idaho State Police Commercial Vehicle Safety Section joined other agencies across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico participating in the 27th annual Roadcheck Program June 3-5. Roadcheck is sponsored by the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance and is the largest targeted-enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 17 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute from Canada to Mexico during the 72-hour period.

What to do with a used car seat
Many of the 12 million car seats Americans buy every year eventually end up in a landfill. Recycling would reduce the amount of car seat landfill waste, but it's in effect in limited places. Some states and communities offer local recycling of some seat parts, though there isn't a large-scale effort to manage this waste. One reason: Stripping down seats and separating the various materials for recycling is a highly manual (aka expensive) process.

Encore (5-30-14) Eastern Idaho transportation, economic issues lead May board meeting
The transportation board learned about transportation and economic issues affecting eastern Idaho during its regional tour and business meeting in Pocatello May 21-22. Beginning in Blackfoot and ending in Pocatello, the board traveled through communities such as Shelley, Aberdeen and American Falls.

Encore (5-30-14) Combating 100 days of highway safety challenges
The 100 days between the Memorial and Labor Day holidays is the deadliest time for crashes on Idaho roads, according to ITD statistics. The increase in crashes comes at a time when driving and road conditions often are at their best. During the “100 deadliest days,” Treasure Valley residents can expect to see traffic teams made up of multiple law enforcement agencies working together to target unsafe driving.

ITD last week launched new mobile-friendly websites for three Interstate 84 construction projects in the Treasure Valley that will help motorists navigate through three major interstate construction projects. The websites represent the department’s commitment to expanding public outreach efforts to better serve the needs of its customers.

Outstanding Customer Service
Encore (5-30-14) Knows what good customer service looks like
A manager for most of her career, an unidentified ITD customer recognizes good service when it’s delivered. That opportunity came recently, thanks to the Division of Motor Vehicles. The customer faxed her appreciation to the department last month, complimenting the DMV’s Driver ‘s Services section, especially Doreen O’Neil, for help in completing a license transaction.
